Rainbow Connections prioritizes the rights of our participants with an understanding of state laws and ethical standards of care. We understand that rural LGBTQ+ youth face a multitude of environments that may impact how they receive support.
Some LGBTQ+ youth may not be in a position where they feel safe sharing their gender and sexual identities with those around them, including their guardians, that may be a barrier to accessing supportive mental health care.
New York legal guidelines allow a licensed mental health care practitioner to provide outpatient care to minors if the minor voluntarily seeks services, the services are necessary to support the minors well-being, and the guardian is unavailable.
Parental unavailability includes the following:
Circumstances such as those where parental involvement would be detrimental to the treatment of the participant.
The guardian denies care that is deemed necessary by the provider and participant.
